According to the Tax Foundation, Montana ranks 5th in the nation for having the best taxes for business success a position it has held since 2019. Montana ranked 21st in terms of corporate taxes and 25th in terms of individual income taxes. The Big Sky Journal reports the Treasure State is 28th for property taxes and 20th as to the impacts of unemployment insurance tax. New Jersey has the worst tax environment.

Montana lawmakers have approved a way to finance energy efficiency projects in commercial buildings in a more affordable way. Commercial Property Assisted Capital Enhancements lower upfront costs that might scare reluctant owners away from improvements. Ed Gulick is vice president of High Plains Architects and chair of the clean energy task force at the Northern Plains Resource Council. He says energy efficiency in buildings has a high return on investment.
