65 state inmates were transferred to the private prison near Shelby this week as part of a deal ending the Montana Department of Corrections’ use of the regional prison in Cascade County. The Crossroads Correctional Center is a major employer in Shelby holding almost 15% of the county’s total population with a 712-bed facility for both federal and state inmates. The Montana Department of Corrections got approval for the transfer from the Legislature earlier this year and put the details into its upcoming contract renewal with CoreCivic.
