RDO Equipment Launches Registered Apprenticeship Program for Service Technicians

In a significant step toward strengthening Montana’s workforce, RDO Equipment Co. announced in May the launch of a registered apprenticeship pathway for heavy equipment service technicians in partnership with the Montana Department of Labor and Industry.

The initiative comes as demand for skilled service technicians continues to rise across the state, while fewer workers enter the field.

“Service technicians are more in demand in Montana than ever before,” said Sarah Swanson, commissioner of the Montana Department of Labor and Industry. “With more professionals leaving the field than entering, the need to eliminate barriers to entry and offer comprehensive skills training has become crucial.”

Swanson said registered apprenticeships help employers build talent pipelines while strengthening Montana’s labor force.

The new Service Technician Registered Apprenticeship program is designed as an entry-level opportunity that allows apprentices to complete a three- to four-year training program while working toward Service Technician III certification.

“We’ve structured this state-recognized apprenticeship program to develop fully qualified service technicians through hands-on training, mentorship and clearly defined skill progression,” said Adam Gilbertson, senior vice president of Mountain Construction and Field Technology at RDO Equipment.

Swanson said the program offers participants the chance to earn wages while gaining valuable workforce skills.

“This is an amazing opportunity for Montanans to earn a wage while gaining in-demand skills that will allow them to advance in their careers,” she said.

A key component of the initiative is RDO’s Access Your Future framework, which provides students with hands-on experience while helping them transition from education into the workforce. The program is aimed especially at high school students interested in skilled trades careers.

“The partnership with RDO Equipment is a pivotal element in our mission to develop the next generation of construction service technicians,” said John Hurd, recruiting manager at RDO. “We want to play an active role in developing a strong workforce, ensuring that students are equipped with both knowledge and experience that will serve them throughout their careers.”

Swanson said the program will help students gain practical experience and advance more quickly in their education and career paths.

Registered apprenticeship participation in Montana reached an all-time high in 2025, with more than 3,400 apprentices working across more than 800 employers statewide. The growth is part of Gov. Greg Gianforte’s 406 JOBS initiative, which focuses on workforce development and expanding skilled training opportunities.

“This expansion marks a crucial moment for our state,” Swanson said. “The addition of new apprenticeship programs shows just how much opportunity awaits young people in the trades.”

As demand for skilled technicians continues to grow, state leaders and industry partners say programs like RDO’s apprenticeship initiative represent an important investment in Montana’s future workforce.
