Fentanyl was first produced in the 1960s as a pharmaceutical to treat severe pain but in recent years labs with resources to create the same compound illicitly have supplied traffickers who have carried pills and loose fentanyl powder across the United States and into Montana. Last year Montana saw an increase of over 1,200% compared to 2020 with just over five pounds or 2,270 milligrams of fentanyl powder being seized.
