The Wyoming Game and Fish Department Director Brian Nesvik will provide testimony about chronic wasting disease Wednesday, Dec. 4 to the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. The Committee hearing is on what is known as a discussion draft bill that would create a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Chronic Wasting Disease Task Force. Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso is the Chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee.

“Chronic wasting disease is a wildlife challenge that is very important to Wyoming, but this is a national concern as well,” said Nesvik. “Wyoming has been a leader in research and CWD management, and I am glad to lend knowledge to decision-makers at the national level.”

Wyoming’s wildlife managers, the Game and Fish Commission and the public have been working for over 40 years to learn more about and manage the fatal disease that impacts moose, elk and deer populations. Most recently, Game and Fish convened a collaborative CWD Working Group to provide input on updating the state’s CWD management plan. A draft of the plan is available for public comment now.
