Homelessness – a Western Montana Public Responsibility
(27 minutes) Missoula has the largest homeless population of any urban area in Montana. To tackle the issue, elected officials and community members drew up the “Reaching Home” 10-year plan to end homelessness in 2012. In our continuing series, Eran Pehan, Missoula’s Director of the Office of Housing and Community Development, provides details on the plan and projects aimed at increasing affordable housing.
Also, as part of the public’s responsibilities when it comes to homelessness, Missoula Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Travis Welsh talks about the first-responder encounters with the chronic homeless and transient population. Often the most visible among the homeless, they account for 25% of the population but utilize 50% of the social service resources.
