FCC Data Overstating Broadband Access in Rural Montana

    9:35 AM-10:00 AM
    2019.04.17

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is responsible for collecting data to measure access to broadband Internet across the country.  These data are used to prioritize funding for areas that have relatively poor access, as well as to help Internet Service Providers (ISPs) identify communities in which to invest additional resources. However, the FCC’s methodology in collecting this data has come under increasing scrutiny and criticized for systematically overestimating how much broadband access truly exists, especially for rural areas.

Our guest will be Zachary Cikanek who serves as the chief spokesperson for Connect Americans Now (CAN) to talk about the impact of the digital divide and CAN’s efforts to expand access to all of rural America.
