Half Of All Football Teams Make the Playoffs!
So are you surprised by that headline that half of all Montana high school football teams advance to the post season? Well it’s true of the 139 high school football in the state, 68 will move on into the playoffs starting next week! A year ago eight teams that did not have a winning record made it into the playoffs. Plus the average margin of victory in the first round of the 8-man playoffs a year ago was 40! The average M-O-V in the 6-man class “C” playoffs was 34!
Here is the breakdown in “AA” football 57% of the teams move on, that’s 8 of 14! In class “A” it’s 55%, 12 of 22. Now no classification took a bigger hit the last couple of years than class “B”. Today there’s only 26 football programs in “B”, but they have kept the same playoff format with 16 teams in the post season. So in “B” 62% of all teams advance. Our state’s largest football classification is in the 8-man game with 41 teams! Just 39% or 16 of 41 move on. Than in the high scoring game of 6-man class “C” football it’s 44%, 16 of 36!
Now this also adds to some exciting upsets. Case in point what took lace this past season in round number one of the class “A” playoffs. That is when 3rd seeded Laurel opened at home up against #6 Glendive. During the regular season Laurel won 20-0, but in the playoffs the Glendive Red Devils stunned the trainmen 28-20!
